Joint Replacement Surgery (also referred to as Joint Arthroplasty) involves the removal of the damaged cartilaginous surfaces of a joint through carefully planned cuts of the bone utilizing specialized guides sized to each individual patient.  These cuts facilitate the placement of a replacement joint through the use of a biocompatible metal cap and interposed plastic (polyethylene) spacer. The procedure can involve one complete half of the joint (hemiarthroplasty), one partial half of the joint (unicompartmental arthroplasty), or both complete sides of the joint (total joint arthroplasty). These procedures are typically reserved for severe degenerative or post traumatic joint disease that is no longer relieved by conservative treatments such as activity modification, weight loss, improved shoe wear, physical therapy, nutritional supplements such as glucosamine/chondroitin, non-steroidal ant inflammatory medications, bracing, and steroid injections. Outcomes are highly dependent on optimizing pre-existing medical conditions (such as diabetes and peripheral vascular disease), the quality of the surgery, and early post-operative rehabilitation. Typically considered a last resort for the treatment of arthritis, the procedure is highly effective at relieving pain and restoring joint mobility.
