Joint Preservation Surgery aims to restore movement to your joints, decrease pain, and potentially delay the need for joint replacement procedures. These procedures are used to address focal deficits to the cartilage, which are often the result of acute trauma. Arthroscopic procedures can be used to graft donor cartilage or transplant autologous (patient’s own) cartilage from non-critical portions of the joint to those that are essential for pain free motion and weight bearing. Alternatively, a patient’s cartilage cells can be harvested for culture outside the body and are later transplanted back to the defective area.  Finally, some joint preservation procedures involve correcting limb malalignment by cutting and realigning the bones through open or mini open procedures utilizing specialized plates and screws, or in some cases external fixation.

A joint is where two or more bones come together, such as the knee. As joints move, the surfaces glide and roll over each other. The ends of the bones are softened by a substance called “cartilage,” which allows bones to move over each other without causing pain or stiffness. Arthritis is the degeneration of this cartilage. It can be caused by natural wear and tear over the course of a lifetime or, in younger patients, by alternative causes like inflammation. Eventually, cartilage can deteriorate to the point where joint replacement is necessary. Joint preservation techniques delay the need for these procedures. Physical therapy strengthens the muscles around a particular joint to help absorb more impact from motion. Specialized braces can help as well. Sometimes, anti-inflammatory medications will also be prescribed. All three approaches help preserve cartilage and reduce joint pain while increasing range-of-motion.

The joint preservation techniques we provide are:

  • Joint Injections
  • Orthopedic Stem Cell Therapy
  • Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy
  • Cartilage Transplant
  • Partial Replacement
  • Limb Malalignment
